K-8 Social Skill Development, Abuse Prevention, and Anti-Bullying Programs
The Christ the Teacher Catholic School Division is concerned about the safety and well-being of our students and has implemented a number of preventative programs at each grade level which provide students with skills and strategies for coping with stressful and potentially threatening situations which may be encountered at school and in everyday life. These programs include:
-
Kindergarten and Grade 1 - The Incredible Years is designed to promote emotional and social competence and to prevent, reduce, and treat behavioural and emotional problems in young children (2 to 8 years old). Young children with high rates of aggressive behavioural problems have been shown to be at great risk for developing substance abuse problems, becoming involved with deviant peer groups, dropping out of school, and engaging in delinquency and violence. Ultimately the aim of the teacher, parent, and child training programs is to prevent and reduce the occurrence of aggressive and oppositional behaviour, thus reducing the chance of developing later delinquent behaviours. Incredible Years addresses multiple risk factors known to be related to the development of conduct disorders in children in both school and home.
-
Grade 1 - C.A.R.E. (Challenge Abuse through Respect Education) is a personal safety program with a focus on child sexual abuse prevention. c.a.r.e. focuses on body ownership and these simple personal safety rules:
Lessons and interactive activities deal with appropriate and inappropriate touching and the right to their own body. Concepts like privacy, bribery, and secrecy are explored through games, stories and activities. Studies indicate that at least 25% of Canadian children experience some form of sexual abuse. For the victims, the impact can be devastating—physical and emotional trauma, loss of self-esteem, destructive behavior and a long-term inability to develop healthy relationships are just some of the consequences of child sexual abuse. c.a.r.e. aims to help prevent the trauma of abuse by teaching children basic, easily understood skills to help protect themselves, and to get help if they need it. The program will leave children feeling in charge of their bodies and confident in their ability to stay safe.
-
Grades 2 & 3 - Second Step - Second Step is a classroom-based social skills program. It is designed to reduce impulsive, high-risk, and aggressive behaviours; and increase children's social-emotional competence and other protective factors. Group discussion, modeling, coaching, and practice are used to increase students' social competence, risk assessment, decision making ability, self-regulation, and positive goal setting. The program’s lesson content varies by grade level and is organized into three skill-building units covering:
-
Grades 4-6 - Steps to Respect is a social skills program designed to decrease bullying problems by increasing bullying awareness in both school staff and students. Students and staff will learn how to be responsive to bullying. Sessions focuses on the difference between bullying reporting and tattling, joining groups and being a responsible bystander.
