Religion is an integral part of the daily school routine in Catholic schools, both in expression and instruction. All grades use the national Catechetical series Born of the Spirit, supplemented by the Fully Alive family education program. All students, Catholic and non-catholic, journey together throughout daily religious instruction and sacramental preparation. When the time comes for Catholic students to receive the sacrament, non-catholic students receive a special blessing from the celebrant instead. First Communion (Grade 2) The second year religion program focuses on the Eucharist and provides the teaching, experience and family involvement which culminates in the celebration of First Holy Communion. First Reconciliation (Grade 3) Children are prepared for First Reconciliation over several months, using a combined home-school preparation program. The Sacrament is celebrated during the season of Lent. Ukrainian Catholic parents prepare their children in a home-parish program so that the children may participate in the Sacrament of Reconciliation before their First Holy Communion. Confirmation (Grade 8 Roman Catholic Rite) Students of the Roman Catholic Rite begin their preparation for Confirmation in the spring of their grade 7 year with 20 hours of community service projects required in advance of celebrating Confirmation. In the high school, Christian ethics is a required area of study at each grade level. |
