Everyone uses strategies to figure things out in math, but not all strategies are created equal. Students should be exposed to multiple strategies so they can apply efficient ones when needed, or think of more than one way to solve. Number Talks are a great way to uncover student strategies, and allow opportunities for students to learn new strategies from each other. Having a variety of ways to conceptualize numbers and operations creates flexible reasoining and fluency.
